Reasons Free People of Color went to Canada in the 1800’s. I recently had a discussion with someone about this topic — found this article today in the January 1, 1851 copy of The Voice of The Fugitive, page 2, column 5 (Henry C. Bibb’s newspaper published between 1851 and 1853 from Canada. OurOntario.ca Community Newspapers Collection). According to this article, Kentucky (where my Boswell & Richardson ancestors lived in 1851) was considering a law that would require FPOC to leave the state or be sent to prison. Many stayed, but many others chose Canada.
